Nothing emphasizes your loneliness like being woken at 1.30 in the morning by the orgasmic moaning of the neighbours upstairs.

God I hate them.

is it a specific hatred centred around the love-making noise, or general hatred based on their whole being?

we nicknamed one of our old neighbours "pistons" because that's what he sounded like when he was at "it."

Don't you know that racism amongst future kings can only lead to no good?

It's a general hatred based on their whole being. The love-making noise was just the most recent facet.

To be fair it's not constant noise from up there but they just mystify me and every so often they make some post-midnight selfish racket that wakes me up and completely fucks me off.

I don't actually know if it's one bloke living up there, one woman or a couple. They keep weird hours so I often don't hear anything of them until about 10.30 when I hear doors/cupboards slamming etc. Sometimes there's a kid there too.

The first inkling of how things could go came one Sunday night at nearly midnight when I could hear Patrick Moore talking on The Sky At Night on their telly as though it was coming from my front room. I just closed all my doors and went to bed.

The first real aggravation came on another Sunday night when I was just going to sleep and somebody started vacuum cleaning in the flat above - this was about 11.45-12-ish! I thought perhaps it was just a quick one in one room but then it continued and moved around. I got really f*cked off and banged on the ceiling but they either didn't hear or just thought "oh yes, banging about - that's what you do". Fortunately they did stop eventually but I think that was more to do with having finished the cleaning than paying any attention to the time.

I was umming and ahhing about whether to put a note in their mailbox during the week or go and knock on the door one evening - but I didn't really want to become the grumpy neighbour leaving notes and I can't do confrontation. But it turned out that they forced my hand cos on the Thursday night I was woken up at about 3.30 by loud music and singing! It was too loud to ignore and go back to sleep so I had no choice but to go and knock on their door. My heart was racing cos I was angry and didn't want to be doing this. The music went off and a girl (late teens/early twenties) came to the door and was dead apologetic. Because I'd been stewing about it all week I knew what else I wanted to mention so as well as asking for them to keep the music down I asked that they not hoover late at night, and pointed out that every time their doors slam I hear it (we've got fire-closer things on the doors so if you don't prop the door open or catch it as it's closing it'll slam every time). I assumed that the kid couldn't be there but about half an hour later I heard it - so what the hell are they doing making that much noise at that time of night when there's a kid there? It still took me over an hour to get back to sleep as my adrenaline was racing and even when that calmed down I was still re-playing the whole thing over and over again in my mind.

Complaining seemed to do the job though as I didn't hear much more than occasional doors for a while. I think part of the problem is that I don't make an awful lot of noise so they don't know how much of there noise travels.

A couple of weeks ago I got woken by them at about 1.30 Friday night/Saturday morning - loudish music and lots of voices and doors slamming. They obviously had people round but I was able to ignore it and go back to sleep and I think they turned the music down but I was woken up several more times by doors slamming and voices - and then people going up and down the stairs. Then someone went downstairs and outside and I could hear her on her phone calling a cab. Later on I found a solitary chip (potato chip) on the stairs, and a dumped polystyrene fast food container with more outside next to the door. Selfish ignorant twats.

I really should have put a note in their mailbox or gone round to complain after that but again the worst was over and I don't want to confront them (partly cos I don't think I'll deal with it very well face to face).

Last weekend they had people over in the afternoon so the music and voices were back. I was mostly able to ignore it although it was annoying. I don't know if they'd got a Wii or X-box connect or something cos as well as the singing there was a lot of bumping around which was fairly inexplicable otherwise - unless they were moving furniture. The situation deteriorated though as voices were raised and then there were arguments and shouting. I felt quite happy about this as I felt it was perhaps karma and they deserved to have a bad time. Then it went mental - stomping and shouting and it sounded like someone was being pinned down or restrained! I was trying to watch a film so it was a bit distracting - if I hadn't been watching a film I'd have tried harder to listen in and understand what the hell was going on. I started to wonder if I should be going up to see what was going on or if I should call the police. Eventually Some girl went out onto the street and shouted some stuff and eventually was joined by a couple more and they wandered off into the distance (this was probably 9.30-ish). After that things calmed down again for the evening.

So this week when I was woken 1.30-ish by the tail-end of orgasmic moaning it was quite minor but just f*cking annoying. I hate them for making me the grumpy party pooper/killjoy if I complain although it's them who are the selfish c*nts. I hate the fact that I don't know how to just tell them to be more considerate.

Anyway, it could be worse - it's not constant or even frequent (at the moment). Just needed to share.

sorry - saw your reply on my phone last week , and it only showed the above line. didn't realise there was lots more!

it sounds like a nightmare, chief. shit neighbours are horrible. you find yourself getting tense during the evening in case "it starts." especially if the noisemaking is at odd, irregular hours. sounds like you've been more than reasonable.

unfortunately, if things don't improve, you're probably going to have to be unreasonable and a nasty loathsome cuntsack. call the environmental health next time they're noisy, and if they've got a kid, grass them to social services. </littlejohn>

have you all brought the flats or renting? is there a landlord you can complain to?

They is like rentin', yeah?

It's not all that bad really - the above incidents were mostly all I've had over the six-ish months they've been in so it could be loads worse, I just needed to get it off my chest. It's just really annoying when it does happen. And now my neighbour downstairs who I got on with is selling-up and moving out so I don't know who or what I might get under my flat. Hmm.

I've started to construct an ill-formed version in my head of what's going on upstairs. I was baffled by why I've only started hearing them shagging upstairs in the last couple of weeks when they've been there months - surely I should have heard them before? Conclusion: something's changed. I think that one of them (the bloke) has moved out and the other has got a new partner - one who is either better at shagging or one who she feels obliged to make an effort to sound more like she's enjoying it with as the relationship is still new.

I could be completely wrong but that's the kind of half-arsed theory I'm going to support despite having minimal evidence. Let me know if you want to hear my theories about the royal family being lizards or what really happened on September 11th.
