at the risk of sounding like the late review, the register has an interview with adam curtis, who did the power of nightmares series amongst other things. it's worth a read:

tv now tells you what to feel.

it doesn't tell you what to think anymore. from eastenders to reality format shows, you're on the emotional journey of people - and through the editing, it gently suggests to you what is the agreed form of feeling. "hugs and kisses", i call it.

i nicked that off mark ravenhill who wrote a very good piece which said that if you analyse television now it's a system of guidance - it tells you who is having the bad feelings and who is having the good feelings. and the person who is having the bad feelings is redeemed through a "hugs and kisses" moment at the end. it really is a system not of moral guidance, but of emotional guidance.

morality has been replaced by feeling.

that's what all the disorders are about. they are a way of oppressing and measuring whether what you're feeling is the correct feeling. intellect and morality are intimately related but feeling is now predominant.

needless to say, in reality, i haven't even watched the power of nightmares. i've downloaded it, but there's always an episode of buck rogers on bravo that demands my attention instead.

Don't I know it. [8o|] Mind you, I can hardly criticise - I'd probably watch Trinny and Susannah instead. Isn't that dreadful? We must make a pact to watch this instead of shit tv, Papa. And soon.

yeah, but wilma dearing is foxy.

i always used to think that wilma was too thin, like a wand with a perm. when i was a boy i always preferred princess ardala:

i have a similar hat myself. it's great for wearing at the cinema.

i was trying to think who she reminded me of, and i've just thought of it [:(]

Clearly Princess Ardala was more slutty than Wilma Deering, definitely up for it with Buck. Unfortunately you've just ruined everything by bringing Marsh into the equation.

(sorry Ken) I did wonder if a sexist discussion on the merits of Sci-Fi women would bring the dormant post-ers back to life but it doesn't seem to have.

"it's not sexist, it's sexy."

i don't think the other posters are coming back, foxy. thank god you're back though! i shut the forum down for a couple of days over the holidays cos of lack of posts or posters. even now, when posting, i toy with the idea of writing my posts in the condensation on our kitchen window instead of online, cos it'll probably be read by more people. bring out the gypsy violinist.

I think you're being unnecessarily hard on yourself Papa - just because people aren't participating right now. You're a witty get, and quite ingenious too. Things like the Carry-On and Sweeney sound boards are great. And the fact that we can easily paste in or embed links is cool.

If there aren't enough people posting then I suggest we invent more people. It's easy to set up extra hotmail accounts and the like - most people I know already have more than one even if they don't use them. Just register with a new name and add comments. Have a conversation with yourself using your different user names - the world will be none the wiser. Then when new people stumble onto the site by accident they'll think it's a bussling hub of activity. And won't join in cos they won't think they've got anything to say.

And he was on Jarvis Cocker's 6 music show talking about it - they've actually done an edit just with his bits here which I will try to listen to. Honest.

I never watched The Power of Nightmares but have seen his pieces on Screenwipe since.
