Heard the new Bond theme last week.

My immediate reaction to the beginning of the song was that it was a mess - but as it went on it didn't seem quite so chaotic. There were little snippets of brass etc that were clearly Bond bits but that doesn't necessarily make a good Bond Theme. I've heard it a couple of times since and it's growing on me.

Just had a first listen - it does seem 90% sh i t, all over the place. The brass bits remind me of a stripper in a 70's working men's club, but that's just me. Linky here if you want to listen online. There's also a great picture of the pair of them - Alicia's been hogging the fake tan - poor Jack has none.

It's a bit worrying that every break on every commercial tv channel seems to feature a product with a Quantum of Solace tie-in. Sony Tellys, Avon perfume, Coke, etc. etc. I hope this doesn't mean that the films gonna be rubbish...

Jonathan Ross mentioned it in passing on his radio show yesterday. He reckons it was okay but that they'd made a bit of a mess of the script. He said that it wasn't a classic - unlike Casino Royale.

I'll probably go and see it but I think Casino Royale is possibly my favourite Bond film - certainly the best in the last 30 years - so it does make it a hard act to follow.

Have you noticed how when a new Bond film comes out there are sh*te articles in the men's "lifestyle" magazines about James Bond Style. Every single f*cking time. Every single f*cking time.

Have you seen it yet, Shad?

Read a review in The Times on Saturday and they gave it 1 star out of 5 - "They've ruined it", he summarized...

Blimey - that's the harshest review I've heard of for it so far. It seems to be getting a mixed response - I don't think anything rates it as better than Casino Royale but Empire gave it 4 stars out of 5.

I might see it next week - or soon after.

I was hoping that they would finally sort out what's been wrong with the last few Bond films but, after a brief moment of anticipatory glee when I thought they were about to do it, bitter disappointment again with Quantum of Solace.

When-o-when-o-when are they going to get some nippage back in the opening title sequence.

You watch some of the old ones on TV and they're semi-pornographic - sometimes in the middle of the afternoon. Brilliant. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is particularly good I seem to remember.

Bah.

I saw Quantum of Solace last week.

Given that I went in expecting it not to be as good as Casino Royale, I really enjoyed it. It's not without it's shortcomings but it's worth watching. I can't believe the 1 star review - the first half hour alone is worth more than one star.

Daniel Craig is definitely a compelling Bond. I wasn't expecting the action to be as good as Casino Royale but it was better than my expectation.

Without spoiling it for you, I think my main criticism is actually the pace of it. I think they've said it's the shortest Bond film yet and I they could have afforded a little more breathing space - this may have helped with the plot which isn't exactly confusing but they move on so quickly that there are a few little pieces of information that are imparted so quickly or in a throwaway fashion which leaves you not as fully informed as you could be about what's going on. Perhaps some of it would have been less confusing to me if I had watched Casino Royale more recently but I didn't want to do that as I didn't want to be comparing too directly.

Also, although sometimes you can have too much of the Travelogue aspect of these films (thank god Michael Bay didn't direct it else there'd be another hour of slow motion scenery and sunsets etc), in this particular instance I think they could have shown more of the different locations. Apparently this one takes in 6 different countries on three different continents but I can only really remember Italy, a hot one and then a cold one at the end.

In some ways even less of the Bond conventions were in this film than in Casino Royale - where Casino Royale played with the conventions by referencing them or giving them a nod, Quantum of Solace doesn't really do that (or at least not so much) so it's slightly less fun from that angle.

My other criticism would be that there's a little bit too much leaping to conclusions/conveniently knowing who's going to be where. I guess that goes with the territory.

I know that may sound like a lot of criticism but I definitely enjoyed the film. I just find it easier to criticise things than to say what I liked about them. I'd probably give it 7 out of 10. Good but probably not a classic.

And I now love the Jack White/Alicia Keyes theme song - it's really grown on me - so when that came on for the title sequence I got a real buzz. (There's a little piece about it, with a bit of a David Arnold interview, here )

Didn't see any nips in the titles though.

I did have a vague sense of Bourne Identity/Ultimatum a couple of times during this one - which is a pity when Casino Royale managed to avoid that.

It's not like they'll ever not be Bond so long as he's British and wears a tuxedo at some point, but if they stray any further away then it'll start to lose it's identity.
