have you actually got the album? i did consider buying you it for your birthday (the cd that is, not the original vinyl which sells for loads) - but one track is incredibly dodgy so it didn't seem like the best choice.

you can by the cd here though:

I completely missed Jason King/Peter Wyngarde in the seventies (late sixties?) - it was only in the nineties that I heard about him.

It was years after that that I found out Wyngarde played ...

Klytus in Flash Gordon.

I remember enjoying the movie Flash Gordon as a kid but I went off it as I grew older. But as I've grown older still I've developed an increasing affection for the film - the things that annoyed me about it as a teen are the things I love about it now. It stands alongside Barbarella as a camp classic.

I loved Flash Gordon as a littl'un. I remember my mom would have Wogan on the radio in the morning before I went to school, and used to play "9 to 5" by Dolly Parton, and the first few bars sound exactly like "Flash" by Queen. So I always used to get excited for a few seconds cos I thought it was Flash, and then there'd be disappointment because it wasn't.

And that's pretty much how it's been ever since.

I downloaded the album. It's....interesting..."Rape" manages to be sexist and, additionally, racist as well. It's offensive on all levels.

yeah, definitely. years ago creation records had a spin-off/off-shoot label called rev-ola [which appears to have been subsumed/assimilated/adopted into a division of cherry red/rpm records now]. they reissued a bunch of weird, obscure and wonderful stuff including william shatner's the transformed man album and a leonard nimoy compilation. i remember reading creation maestro alan mcgee nixed plans to reissue the wyngarde album because he thought the track "rape" was offensive. at the time i wondered if he was over-reacting but when i heard the track i felt that he was probably justified - i had thought that it might just be inappropriate but it goes beyond not being pc.

neville thumbcatch is lovely though. i first heard it on a collection of junkshop favourites i picked up called magpie. issued by rpm, it's got the theme from magpie, top of the pops and a bunch of familiar tunes that you recognise from the seventies.

now that i've mentioned william shatner's the transformed man i have to just mention the one track missing from that album:

i'm sure you've seen that before but it never gets old for me. and few things are more satisfying than saying shatner.

to paraphrase douglas adams, "this is obviously some strange new meaning of the word `interpret` that i wasn't previously aware of."

Shatner's still at it. In the first moments of this clip I was thrilled, swiftly followed by massive disappointment...
