It's just mental.

I was looking for a cheapo ipod a while back, so was looking on ebay for a second hand one, and the prices were just mental. Like only about a tenner cheaper than just buying a new one from a shop.

Now I'm looking for a digital media streamer. (At the moment, if I download a film, I have to burn it to CD or DOOVDE and then pop it in the DOOVDE player under the telly. With a digital media streamer, it sits under your telly, and connects to your pc via wireless and so you don't need to burn stuff any more. Some of them also allow you to surf the net, watch Youtube, etc. etc.)

Thing is, these things cost over a ton. So I was looking at Apple TV and Mac Minis instead. Apple TV's only play stuff via iTunes though. You can hack them, but need another Mac in order to do this, so it's a bit of a non-starter.

That leaves a Mac Mini. Nice and small and quiet, and can sit under your telly.

But again, they're all mental prices on Ebay. Mac Minis are 400+ new, but year-old-ones are still going for 300+ on ebay. The apple laptops are the worst. Broken / Faulty apple laptops go for over a hundred. It's mental.

Apparently, you can use Xbox 360's to do the same sort of thing (streaming) as well as play games on them of course. But I'm not sure about having a 360 sitting underneath my TV. I mean, I'm not 17 / Chris Moyles. Have the 360 and then a big stacked pile of empty beer cans. Whatever happened to Sapporo?

Some bloke at work has got an i-pad. Not just the most basic one either - so what's that? 700 quid or summit? Someone's obviously got too much money. As Charlie Brooker said - World's most expensive rectangle.

I can't get excited about i-pads or i-phones cos I just think about what else you could do with that money.

The best comment I heard about the i-pad was: Why not just get an i-phone and hold it closer to your face?

A woman at work was talking about the Apple TV - her husband's got one and it's his favourite gadget. Now that you've got a PS3 does that cover all the gubbins required?

Yarse. The old Apple TV had a hard drive in it, so you could store your own files in it, but it didn't have an HDMI output, and you had to hack it if you wanted to display non-quicktime file types (e.g. avi, divx)

The new Apple TV is cheaper, has HDMI output, but no hard drive, so you can only use it (I think) to stream rented content or videos from your pc onto your TV. All content needs to be in iTunes first, I think.

But anyway, yes, the PS3 does most things that I want. I tend to stream video from my NAS to my PS3, but could copy it to my PS3 if I wanted. Most file types are supported. 1080HD don't seem to work very well, but I haven't worked out whether that's due to there not being enough bandwidth to stream the file over my wireless network. In any event, the file sizes to download 1080HD films are enormous, so I tend to stick with 720HD. It's "good enough."

The only other beef with the PS3 is that it doesn't support subtitles very well, so any foreign films I watch have to be converted to AVI first and then the subtitles need to be hardcoded and muxed with the AVI to make a DIVX file.

Oh for f*ck's sake - that's meant to be "Pee-wee gets an ipad" ( http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/f7a03edbd7/pee-wee-gets-an-ipad ) but on my screen it just shows The Landlord with Will Ferrell again.

No worries. I clicked on the link and watched it. That's quite cool. Kinda makes me want to search for more Pee-wee clips BUT IF HE TOUCHES MI KIDS I SWEAR I'LL DO TIME etc.

By the way Steve Carrell has left The Office (US) and the temporary replacement manager is Will Ferrel. He's ace in it, but I believe has now left. There's an interview episode next week with various interviewees like Jim Carrey, Will Arnett, Gervaise. I can't be arsed to spell check any of these names, so apologies.

Back on the Apple front

BBC 3 in interesting programme for people no longer in their target demographic shocker:

Secrets of the Superbrands (first episode available until 9th June)

This has been on for a couple of weeks - the first prog was about technology (Apple, Sony Playstation, Microsoft, Google etc) then the second one was about Fashion brands (Abercrombie & Fitch, Adidas, Nike, Superdry etc). Both were worth a look.

The technology one showed the hoopla around the opening of an Apple store, which filled me with loathing. They also talked to these kids (I can't tell how old kids are - at first I thought they were primary school kids but I'm not sure now) who were being little fascists about phones and gloating about how they were going to get iphones etc. I'm still mostly living in the 20th century though (no Apple products, no smartphone, no MP3 player etc) so it was more interesting to me as an outsider rather than a participant.

I'll try and catch them. I'm afraid I try and avoid BBC3 like the plague, so I'm glad there's something watchable on it.

I'm not keen on Apply myself, I think their stuff is overpriced, don't like the snobbery that can come with them, and from a nerd point of view, I don't like the way they dictate what parts you can change on their laptops, and what apps you're allowed to put on your phone.

That said, they seem quite cool in terms of customer support. Emily had some knackered iPod headphones, and they broke after a few months, and I took them to the Apple Store, and they just gave me a new pair, no questions asked, no worries. Emily's headphone socket stopped working on her out of guarantee iPod and they charged her £60 or something for a brand new 80GB ipod classic replacement. I'd guess their argument is that they can offer that level of support my locking down what you can or can't install / or swap out.

I think they may have learned their lesson the hard way there - there was a prog on the other week, (I know, I know but I don't get out much and my TV is my best friend) about business cock-ups - you know, bad design, bad marketing etc) - and it was talking about the support, or lack of, on the launch of the iphone 4 where people kept getting cut off and losing calls or having poor signal etc. Apple's original response was to ignore the problem, then just to tell people that they were holding it wrong and that they had to hold it a different way - you've just spent hundreds of pounds on a new phone and you can't hold it how you want! It was a rare slip for them and they hastily backtracked but it should never have reached that point.

If you didn't dislike them already then the Superbrands prog would probably be enough to sway you that way.

Oh yeah, they talked a bit about Google and F*c*book too.
